Dynamic content is indeed the answer. It’s something that we recommend for salutations in German and other languages where the translation for Dear is gender specific.
Some clients have an email salutation field which automatically populates the full salutation (via program builder) in the contact’s preferred language. This obviously only works for that field (and only if the contact is being emailed in the preferred language). You also have to make sure that program builder has had time to generate the salutation for every contact in the segment before the email is sent - (eg. if you’re loading an external list and then sending immediately).
