I just figured out my issue. The "elq-edit" only works on block-level elements, as in the instructions found here: Eloqua 10 Email Template Manager. I was attempting to put it on a <span> element, which is not a supported tag. I'm not liking, though, that to edit it opens an editor rather than just typing in the new text from the Email.
