No problem Stephanie Clark, we have done a lot of complex integrations for clients including some like the one you are describing.  In that scenario I'd definitely default to saying the business rules are the key, as long as you have very clear rules about what gets sent to the platform you are integrated with (in your scenario SFDC) then it is not difficult to implement technical logic and rules that mirror the business case.   The hardest part I've seen is organizations getting to the cleanest, clearest version of those rules.
